The municipal president Mauricio Trejo Pureco announced that San Miguel de Allende is consolidating its position as the epicenter of winemaking in central Mexico.

He stressed that San Miguel de Allende returns to one of its ancestral economic vocations such as viticulture, which encompasses the entire value chain that generates wine, thanks to the start of the educational program as Higher University Technician in Sustainable Agriculture Viticulture area to be taught by the Technological University of San Miguel de Allende (Utsma) and giving continuity to the vision that began in 2012.

He recalled that in the previous administration he presided the efforts began so that today San Miguel de Allende becomes the wine reference in the center of the country.

“Many branded us as crazy, but craziness often pays off, and not only do we have beautiful vineyards, but hotels within those vineyards are also beautiful, the vineyards also gave the opportunity for the expansion of weddings, and today we are the number one wedding destination in the country.

“It was worth boosting this sector. We are the wine epicenter of the state of Guanajuato and I have defended it from the center of the Republic. I am happy that one more sector of the economy, tourism, is being promoted from San Miguel de Allende, which is Guanajuato’s window to the world,” he said.

Now that the Utsma has a career as a Higher University Technician in Sustainable Agriculture, Viticulture area, today the young people of San Miguel de Allende and the entire state of Guanajuato will have a great opportunity for academic training, another professional career option, since they will be able to become winemakers or specialized agronomists, added Trejo.

He emphasized that his government’s public policy is to regionalize economies throughout the Guanajuato territory and for this purpose wine tourism is key.

“We have to regionalize the economies, we are 46 municipalities, but there are only 10 or 12 municipalities that generate a very large, very healthy economy, which can really spill all around, already the surrounding municipalities. San Miguel de Allende must start with policies, and we are already looking at it that way, of regionalization of the economy, to produce an economy that will spill over to Dolores Hidalgo, Comonfort, or San Luis de la Paz and that can translate into an economic return for us. Visitors from other municipalities will come here, from here we send an image of a prosperous state, of a healthy economy, that has areas free of violence, that can be visited by all Mexicans and all citizens of the world”, reiterated the mayor.

From the Dos Búhos Vineyard, where this new professional career was announced, Mauricio Trejo acknowledged the state government, particularly Governor Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, and the Ministries of Tourism, Education, and Sustainable Economic Development for making San Miguel a vanguard in various economies.

The municipal president mentioned that San Miguel de Allende is about to achieve twinning with two of the most important cities in the world in the wine industry and, although he kept the names to himself, he affirmed that they will detonate this industry, thus certifying the quality of San Miguel’s vineyards and its wine production with international standards.
