  • SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE HAS PREPARED A WHOLE PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES TO LIVE THE DAY OF THE DEAD WITH SANMIGUELENSE ESSENCE, STARTING ON THE 31ST OF OCTOBER UNTIL THE 2ND OF NOVEMBER.

    Doing things right in favor of traditions and maintaining the vision set by the president, Mauricio Trejo, is reflected in the cultural artistic program that this year will be presented on the occasion of the Day of the Dead in the Best City in Mexico and the world.

    This year 2024, from Thursday 31 October until 2 November, there will be mega ofrendas, altars in neighborhoods, districts and communities, specially decorated facades and public squares and the presentation of dance and music performances in free events for all families of San Miguel and its visitors.

    The celebrations alluding to the ‘most Mexican tradition’ will begin this Thursday, October 31st, with the free presentation for all the public: ‘In Mexico, death is alive’ by the teacher Selene Garcia in the Main Garden.

    On Friday, November 1st, there will be commemorative events all day long, starting at 8am with the Placement of Offerings in the Main Garden, the Civic Plaza and the San Juan de Dios neighborhood, with the participation of schools, civil associations and other NGOs from San Miguel society. Also, at 9am in the San Rafael neighborhood, the Mega Ofrenda will be exhibited by the Yo Amo Mi Barrio collective. In the afternoon, at 6 o’clock in the Jardín Principal, the Blessing of the Offerings will take place; at 7 o’clock in the esplanade of the Jardín Principal will be the presentation of the traditional Aztec dance group ‘Tlaloc’ by Soledad Hernández (+) and there at 8 o’clock in the evening the folkloric ballet of San Miguel de Allende will perform, while at the same time in the cemetery of the San Juan de Dios neighborhood there will be a film show open to the public, to close the day at 11 o’clock in the esplanade of the Jardín Principal with the Velación de Concheros (vigil of the Concheros).

    For this Saturday, November 2nd, the Day of the Dead events will start at 9 am in the San Rafael colony again with the exhibition of the Mega Ofrenda in the San Rafael colony; at 10 am there will be the Placement of the Ofrenda by Patitas de Humanidad San Miguel de Allende AC, in the fountain of the Ángela Peralta theatre; at 5:30 pm in the Main Garden there will be a monologue ‘La Catrina en la Alameda’: 30 in the afternoon in the Jardín Principal the monologue ‘La Catrina en la Alameda’ will be presented and at 6 in the evening the traditional ‘Desfile de Catrinas’ will take place with a route through the historic centre that goes from El Cardo to the Plaza Principal, ending at the corner of Correo and Corregidora streets. At 7 p.m., there on the esplanade of the Main Garden, the Aztec dance group ‘Tlaloc’ of Soledad Hernandez will perform again, and it will culminate there at 8 p.m. with the dance and death games of the folkloric ballet ‘Mazatl’.

    San Miguel has been bathed in color with more than 10,000 cempasúchil flowers, which will decorate the entire historic center, its public squares, the entrances to this World Heritage City and other public spaces in the neighborhoods, districts and rural communities of San Miguel; in addition, these flowers will be used as compost at the end of their display period and will fertilise the green areas of the main streets.
