Statistics for missing women in Guanajuato and in Mexico are horrific, heartbreaking—inconceivable! According to the Secretaría de Gobernación (Secretary of State) the number of disappeared women has increased year after year–an average of five women go missing each day! “People get really bogged down and don’t know how to respond to the numbers—but empty red dresses communicate powerfully,” says one of the founders of the Red Dress Project.

The focus of Ser Mujer this year is missing women and empty red dresses that call attention to them. The bright red hues of off-the-shoulder maxidresses, minidresses, and long-sleeve styles stand out against their surroundings in San Miguel. The color red symbolizes many things—blood, anger, love—but was ultimately chosen because it’s eye-catching. People walking by can’t ignore them.

Ser Mujer is a San Miguel de Allende group of Mexican, American and Canadian women of all ages who partner with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to promote women’s issues across cultures, raise awareness of their challenges, and celebrate their accomplishments and contributions.  See the website at www.sermujersma.com for a complete list of programs, workshops and events during for Women’s History Month from Tuesday, March 1-Thursday, March 31, 2022.

Sandra Delgado Jiménez is a clinical psychologist. Originally from Tampico, she has been living in San Miguel for 13 years.  For four years, she hosted a local television show on psychology and has worked with the Instituto de Mujeres and the Red Cross as a counselor. She is currently in private practice.

Trish Snyder is a former social worker and fund raiser. She is one of the founders of Ser Mujer and has worked as a volunteer with domestic violence survivors, indigenous midwife students, and teaching English as a second language since moving to San Miguel de Allende in 2007.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change. For more information, contact President Skip Essick at skipessickmedia@gmail.com.
