San Miguel has seen a number of transitions in the availability of medical care in the past decade as former hospitals have closed, and new medical clinics and hospitals have opened. And change continues with the opening of a new hospital in town on the premises of a couple of former acute care facilities.
The hospital is called “Hospital Joya” and the Mid-Day Rotary will be featuring its medical director, Dr. Carlos Quintero. Among other services, Dr. Quintero discusses the hospital’s emergency room and intensive care facilities and explains the challenges the hospital faces during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Throughout the pandemic, our citizens have expressed various concerns about the adequacy of health care. Does San Miguel has an adequate number of acute care hospital bed? Must patients be transferred outside of San Miguel, and if so, under what circumstances? Do we have enough professional and support staffing? Is there adequate personal protection equipment for patients and staff? And what about equipment such as ventilators? Will the availability of vaccines change the concerns mentioned above? Is there more that the public and medical professionals can do in the face of this pandemic? Dr. Quintero touches upon some of these issues in his talk.
Dr. Quintero received his medical degree at the Universidad de Guadalajara and received training at the Hospital Valentin Gómez Farias in Guadalajara and the Hospital Regional de Puerto Vallarta. But his practice of medicine was augmented by a strong talent and interest in hospital administration from a young age.
In 2009, he co-founded a civil association called the Medical Students of the State of Jalisco and in 2012, he co-founded the Association of Residents of Jalisco. From 2014 to 2017, he was the medical coordinator of Hospital San Javier Marina and Riviera in Puerto Vallarta and he coordinated a hospital quality forum during this time. He also served as a medical director of Sanmaré Clinic in Puerto Vallarta.
Dr. Quintero has an interest in and is currently expanding his studies in Wellness and Health Management. This field of study is increasing internationally and, as a result, the citizens of San Miguel will have broader access to tools for living healthier lives at home and in work environments.
Rotary is where neighbors, friends and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change.
