The heritage city of San Miguel de Allende is one of the most emblematic cities in Mexico and keeps in its bowels a deep history linked to the country’s independence. The Casa de Allende, built in the mid-eighteenth century by Don Domingo de Allende, is an architectural jewel that represents not only the greatness of the colonial era, but also the legacy of a national hero, Ignacio de Allende who was born there on January 21, 1797.

Ignacio Allende, who was born in this house, was one of the main promoters of the insurgent movement that began the War of Independence. Throughout his life, and especially after the beginning of the conflict, he lived moments of great anguish, as he was forced to flee and disperse with other insurgents. His house, which reflects the splendor of San Miguel architecture, with its imposing façade, wrought iron balconies and an inscription on the frieze that reads “HIC NATUS UBIQUE NOTUS” (“Here born and everywhere known”), is now a testament to his life and his struggle for freedom.

The house became the property of the Lazarín Allende family, direct descendants of Ignacio, who lived in it for generations. Years later, it was acquired by different families until, in 1976, the state of Guanajuato bought the property to preserve its historical value. The restoration process began in 1985 and culminated in 2009, with a significant investment to return it to its original splendor.

Today, the Allende House Museum houses not only pays tribute to the life and work of the insurgent, but also offers a comprehensive vision of the colonial era and the circumstances that led to independence. The museum’s rooms recreate the environment in which a nineteenth-century Creole family lived, with an atmosphere of what Allende’s life was like in the place.

Inaugurated in 1990 and restored after its closure in 2007, the museum is a must-see for anyone who wishes to better understand the history of San Miguel de Allende and the struggle for independence. Its reopening in 2009, presided over by President Felipe Calderón, marked a milestone in the conservation of the region’s historical heritage.

Currently, the Allende House Museum is a symbol of our history and the ideals that define us as a nation. This building, witness to crucial moments, continues to be a living legacy that invites us to reflect on the principles of freedom and justice that drove our national heroes, so don’t forget to visit it from Tuesday to Sunday right next to the parish of San Miguel Arcángel.
