The water situation in the state of Guanajuato is becoming a matter of concern, especially for the rural sector, as the dams and basins in the municipalities are drying up and the rains are not coming. We are expecting a difficult year.
According to the Drought Monitor of the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), 19 municipalities in Guanajuato have extreme drought conditions, that is, with major losses in crops and pastures, in addition to an extreme risk of forest fires and generalized restrictions in the use of water due to its scarcity.
Pénjamo, Abasolo, Acámbaro, Manuel Doblado, Coroneo, Cortazar, Cuerámaro, Huanímaro, Irapuato, Jaral del Progreso, Jerécuaro, Moroleon, Pueblo Nuevo, Salamanca, Santa Cruz de Juventino Rosas, Tarandacuao, Valle de Santiago, Villagran and Yuridia are the municipalities in this condition.
Twenty-three municipalities are in a severe drought phase, that is, with probable crop and pasture losses, a high risk of fires, water shortages are common and the National Water Commission recommends imposing restrictions on water use.
San Miguel de Allende, Apaseo el Alto, Apaseo el Grande, Atarjea, Celaya, Comonfort, Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato Capital, Leon, Ocampo, Purisima del Rincon, Romita, Salvatierra, San Diego de la Union, San Felipe, San Francisco del Rincon, Santa Catarina, Santiago Maravatio, Silao, Tarimoro, Tierra Blanca, Uriangato and Xichu, are the municipalities with severe drought conditions.
Only in four municipalities the drought is moderate, that is, with some damage to crops and pasture, with high risk of fires, low levels in rivers, streams, reservoirs, watering holes and wells, and voluntary restriction in water use is suggested. These are: Victoria, San Luis de la Paz, San José Iturbide and Doctor Mora.
Governor Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, during a tour in San Francisco del Rincón, said that this will be a difficult year and a very hot season, so he suggested that we should not waste water, on the contrary, we should take care of it as much as possible.
