    Published April 14, 2023

The International Cervantino Festival (FIC), one of the most important cultural events in Mexico and the largest performing arts event in Latin America, will have the United States and the state of Sonora as guests to celebrate its 51st edition. The appointment will be from October 11 to 29 in the city of Guanajuato, Guanajuato.

The presentation of the event was made during the last days of February at a press conference at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, where the governor of the guest state, Alfonso Durazo and Ken Salazar, the US ambassador to Mexico, participated.

“I welcome the United States and Sonora to the largest cultural festival in Latin America,” said Mariana Aymerich, director of the festival and general director of Promotion and Cultural Festivals.

“There are many hopes and illusions placed in this edition and with these wonderful guests of honor I am sure that we will meet the expectations of the public. It will be a meeting full of tradition and origin, avant-garde and diversity”

For his part, Durazo celebrated that 50 percent of the events are free and thanked the invitation and the possibility that the state of Sonora will coincide with the United States, a country with which it borders. He took the opportunity to pronounce himself in favor of the existence of a border culture, which he described as “a migrant culture.”

It was the turn of Ambassador Ken Salazar, who recalled the visit of President Joe Biden to Mexico in January and reiterated that the relationship between the two countries “is forever.”

Likewise, the Secretary of Culture of Mexico, Alejandra Frausto, was present and addressed her speech from the strength of culture against discrimination and emphasized the migratory phenomenon that continues to increase in recent years between Mexico and the United States.

“We cannot be outside the moment we are living as sister nations and the commitment to culture is fundamental. Against barbarism, culture is the way.”

We are honored that in the year we celebrate #200AñosUSMX @cultura_mx has designated the United States as the guest country of honor for #51FIC @cervantino. Ready to collaborate with @GobiernoMX, @ECAatState and @NEAarts in this great work! ???? #SociosVecinosAmigos pic.twitter.com/h1CdQaPueX

In 2022, when the 50th edition of the festival was held, the guests were South Korea and Mexico City, with whom a calendar of activities was presented that for 19 days filled the city of Guanajuato with various artistic and cultural disciplines such as dance, music, literature and theater, among others.

It is expected that the programming, concerts and art exhibitions that are planned for the festival will come out soon. It is also possible that more activities will be carried out in Mexico City. At the moment, it should be noted that the call for the elaboration of the image of the 52nd edition of the FIC will be open until March 24 and the amount of the prize is 30 thousand pesos.

The city of Guanajuato is considered one of the most beautiful in the country, was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is proud of its mining past. Year after year the FIC is carried out in this city, the main objective of this celebration is a cultural offer focused on different audiences.

Throughout their 51 years they have managed to build a space of diffusion that drives national creation “opening the Cervantes stages to Mexican artists, seeking the distribution of cultural wealth.”

The Cervantino generally includes activities, discussion forums and shows that address issues of enormous relevance: the social and geopolitical order, care for the planet, migration, tolerance, coexistence, new communication technologies and globalization, in a framework of appreciation for our roots.

According to data issued by the Ministry of Culture, it was in 1953 when Enrique Ruelas, cultural promoter, made the assembly of the Entremeses Cervantinos, a tribute to the Spanish novelist and playwright Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, considered one of the greatest figures of Spanish literature. Since then, this international festival has been held every year in Guanajuato.
