    Workshops for Quality Storytelling

    by Vicki Totten

“Only write from your own passion, your own truth. That’s the only thing you really know about, and anything else leads you away from the pulse.”

     —Marianne Williamson

As a writer, deciding who will tell your story and then digging deep in order to tell the truth, can lead to quality story telling. And just as important is knowing how to effectively revise your story, and how to deal with rejection. All of these topics will be covered in four different November workshops offered on-line by the San Miguel Literary Sala.

    1. Who’s in Charge Here? Choosing the Right Point of View for Your Story with Annie Tucker on Nov. 10, 3:00-6:20pm CST

Instructor Annie Tucker will help fiction writers identify all points of view available to them and which one to use to have a consistent narrator tell the story. Participants will do a series of exercises and take away a heightened understanding of how to plumb the depths of their characters’ minds and ensure that their audiences have the reliable narrators they need to guide them through the novel.

Tucker is a ghost writer, writing coach, and developmental editor with 22 years of experience. She specializes in literary and commercial fiction, memoir and narrative nonfiction and has edited more than 700 books.

    1. Architecture, Music, and Texture:  A Creative Approach to Revision with Amy Gottlieb on Nov. 8 and 10, 5:30-7:00pm CST

Revision is often viewed as dreary and ruthless, yet it can be a creative and transformative process when you re-envision a draft in terms of its internal logic, its music, and its patterns.  Amy Gottlieb will help participants break down revision into a three-part process, exploring creative revision techniques to help find the vitality in your work and make it shine.

Gottlieb’s novel The Beautiful Possible was a finalist for the Ribalow Prize, Wallant Award and a National Jewish Book Award.  She is a popular book coach and mentor.

    1. Writing your Truth in the Personal Essay and Memoirwith Nadine Kenney Johnstone. Nov. 9 and 11, 3:00-4:30pm CST

If you want to write about your past, it is crucial that you learn how to dig deep enough to write your truth, which sometimes means overcoming worries about how people will respond, especially if they are one of the characters you are writing about.  By studying other truth telling writers, participants will learn how to silence their inner critic to tell the story they need to tell.

Nadine Kenney Johnstone is the author of the memoir, Of This Much I’m Sure, which was named Book of the Year by the Chicago Writers Association. She is a podcast host (Heart of the Story) and a writing coach who helps female writers develop and publish their stories. She has taught writing at universities for 15 years.

    1. Rejection BINGO! How to Improve Your Manuscript Through Rejectionwith Elizabeth Kracht. Nov. 9 and 11, 5:30-7:00pm CST

Learning how to use rejection to achieve your publishing goals can help get that book accepted for publication.  Instructor Elizabeth Kracht will teach you how to change your perspective on rejection in a fun and interactive way (Rejection Letter BINGO!) and use it to your advantage in the publishing industry.  She will cover the top ten editorial reasons for rejection and how to apply them.

Elizabeth Kracht is a literary agent with Kimberley Cameron & Associates and the author of The Author’s Checklist: An Agent’s Guide to Developing and Editing Your Manuscript. She also works as a freelance developmental editor and writing coach, and is co-founder of the Literary Salon Series.
