Danzón? Never Heard Of It!
Danzon
By Leonardo Rosen
Since danzón virtually doesn’t exist outside Cuba and Mexico, the response “Danzón? Never heard of it!” from people not from those countries is not uncommon. Even San Miguel de Allende, a Mexican city, doesn’t have danzón as a tradition, or if it did, it disappeared long ago.
However, this dance has a great deal of popularity all over this country, and as nearby as places like Celaya, Guanajuato, Querétaro, and San Juan Del Río, etc., they present it every week in a public plaza or jardín. The danzón is the national dance of Cuba and has been in Mexico for more than 140 years. We danzoneros of San Miguel represent our city at national events with thousands of people. Yet in all my years of teaching the danzón and presenting public events and a radio show, I feel that I haven’t been able to adequately get this across in this town. However, I will keep trying!
For more information, please call 154 5840 (Leo, “El Brujo del Danzón”).
Many thanks to the dancers of San Miguel for the success of our previous events. As we always say, you are the stars of this show. “¡Qué Viva Su Majestad, el Danzón!”
