Prominent local artist Andrew Klein will open a solo exhibit at the Galeria Blue Moon on Friday, September 13, 2024. This exhibit is the culmination of a ten-year love affair with desert plants, namely cacti and succulents.
“I always had a few plants and flowers in my Boston loft – orchids from Whole Foods, and a night-blooming cereus that grew to monstrous proportions. But I never had my own garden to cultivate …. until I moved to San Miguel,” said Klein.
“To be honest, I know nothing about plants, not their botanical names, nor their classifications or origins. That has little relevance for me. What most interests me about plants is their forms and colors. I draw them incessantly, as they actually appear. Then through a process of reduction, I reinvent them as minimalist ‘sculpture.’ The final image is no longer recognizable as a plant,” he explained.
“My motivation is to create new forms, inspired by the bounty of Nature’s inventiveness. I aim to surprise myself, and to delight the viewer. Sometimes my paintings seem to project melancholy or brooding, and sometimes a comical, silly, feeling.
“Living plants, like we humans, experience the full range of moods and emotions. Of this I am convinced. If you join us at Galería Blue Moon for the opening of my solo exhibit, on Friday September 13 at 5:00 p.m., you will see it all for yourselves.”
Galería Blue Moon is a collaborative, cooperative art gallery located in San Miguel de Allende, a Unesco World Heritage city in the central, high desert plains of Mexico. It was founded in 2021 by an eclectic group of artists working in the mediums of painting, photography, collage and fiber art. Thematically conceived, monthly exhibits provide a venue for the cooperative members to show a range of their artwork and practice. Guest artists are invited to curate solo shows throughout the year.
As a cooperative, the gallery does not charge a commission fee to the exhibiting artists. All sales go directly to the artists. Cooperative members support the ongoing efforts of the gallery by paying a monthly stipend. Donations to our Galería Blue Moon are greatly appreciated and support our ongoing efforts to democratize and support the arts in SMA.
