John Hillmer Pops Up at Bordello Galeria
“Painting is a form of nonviolent revolution. It is therapy for mind and soul. Art is peace in the storm. Art is the storm.”
Artist John Hillmer pops back up for a weekend in the lovely Bordello Galeria courtyard. This is your invitation.
“After nearly two years away from in-person shows,” says Hillmer, “it’s time to start over. Art is one way to turn a new leaf, mix a new batch of colors, start a new chapter.”
In addition to a colorful mix of prints, this show will feature a host of original paintings expressing what he playfully calls “Love in the Time of Covid”. Whether it’s communing with nature, being in some forced or voluntary lockdown, meditating on profound personal/planetary matters, or sneaking into a closed swimming pool to do some laps, love (and art) comes in many forms.
Hillmer’s art chapters have indeed come in many forms. His large stage murals have accompanied artists such as Ray Charles, Keb’ Mo’, and Maya Angelou. His art and design work has helped to celebrate more than 50 music, literary, and community events across North America. He also served for five years as a teacher in the high school at the American School of Guadalajara.
Music, Mexico, and madness, he says, remain common themes. Painting, playing, and praying remain common practices.
Join us this weekend in the courtyard, enjoy some uncommon art, and perhaps turn a new leaf.
