Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland is an award-winning innovator, educator, artist and activist. She is the founder and CEO of the Women Invested to Save Earth Fund (WISE), an organization committed to finding solutions to the environmental crisis.  Dr. Copeland also founded Black Philanthropy Month.  Recognized in the Congressional Record for her civic contributions, Dr. Copeland has championed social and environmental causes for 40 years, and her efforts have touched at least 20 million people.

She is also a noted jazz singer.  Her recent album Blachant has been classified as “Gullah Geechee fusion music.”

In honor of Martin Luther King’s birthday month, Lady Zen is producing six soul fusion events at Café Rama, between January 13 and 31.

Dr. Copeland will showcase her Blachant album in a dinner show on Wednesday, January 17 and 31 (dinner at 6, show at 7). The cover charge is 300 MX (pay at door in cash), and there is a minimum consumption charge of 300 MX per person.

On Saturday, January 13, at 7pm, and Sundays, January 14, 21 and 28, at 11am, Dr. Copeland will team up with jazz/gospel singer Danielle Simmons (a headliner for the San Miguel Jazz & Blues Festival), for a gospel concert in honor of Dr. King.  For this event, Café Rama will feature a special menu of soul food cuisine.  The cover charge is 400 MX (pay at door in cash), and there is a minimum consumption charge of 400 MX per person.

Next to the Rosewood Hotel just outside the center of town, Cafe Rama is another popular spot with San Miguel’s visitors and resident expats. With mismatched furniture and the contemporary art on the walls (much of which is for sale) it’s heading in the direction of trendy, but the food remains reasonably priced. Good coffee, a wide selection of teas, and classics such as eggs Florentine make it an excellent option for breakfast, while the evening menus offer something to suit all tastes. Open until midnight, Cafe Rama also keeps a well-stocked bar with a long list of cocktails to choose from.

This is a super-hip little indoor café with a Berkley ‘70’s vibe. They have a very good and interesting breakfast menu (and equally delicious lunch and dinner menus), and high quality coffee. This tiny cafe has received great reviews in numerous publications including the New York Times and Vogue, and on countless food blogs. If you have a large group, we definitely recommend reservations.
