One of Mexico’s biggest bands had its modest origins in San Miguel de Allende in 1999. That year, Pilaseca, founded by lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Paco Rivera and bassist Mauricio Valdez (Pawis), began a residency at Mama Mia, a restaurant in Centro. Before long, the band, which bills itself as funk, rock, Latin, soul and electronic, had built a significant audience.
Albums soon followed, starting with Humo de Cigarro (Cigar Smoke) in 2000. Their second album, Afrodisiaco (Aphrodisiac), released in 2003, not only brought the band widespread recognition in Mexico, but also the United States. The album was praised by Rolling Stone magazine and led to a tour of cities such as Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. Pilaseca played in legendary West Hollywood clubs Whisky a Go Go and Roxy Theatre, and took part in major music festivals, such as South by Southwest (Austin) and Vive Latino (Mexico City).
By 2012, the band was packing so much heat that a third album, Mi Suerte Cambio (My Luck Has Changed), was produced by Thom Russo, winner of 16 Grammy Awards, who previously had worked with artists such as Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul and Macy Gray.
This year, the band turns 25, and what better place to celebrate the anniversary than the city of its birth, San Miguel de Allende. On Saturday, July 27, at 7pm (reception at 6:30), Pilaseca will give its anniversary concert at Foro El Obraje, an outdoor amphitheater, conveniently located at Calzada de la Presa #50, in Centro.
Special guest stars will include Benny Ibarra, among others.
Ticket prices range from 500 pesos for “Zona General” (general admission), 800 pesos for “Zona Preferente” (up front near center stage), and 1000 pesos for “Zona Fan VIP,” a section not only by the stage, but with access to the backstage, where you can mingle with the artists and enjoy the backstage bar.
The Foro El Obraje is spacious and elegantly constructed, and there will be plenty of room for dancing. The Restaurant, the concert’s sponsor, will cater the event with food and beverage, and valet parking, costing only 200 pesos, will be available until 1am.
