On Thursday, January 31, the Sixteenth National Jazz Encounter Concert Series brings the Gabriel Hernández Jazz Trio and many other world renowned groups and musicians to perform Gabriel Hernández is one of the most world-renowned Cuban jazz pianists. He has participated in various international festivals in Montreal, Montreux, Poland, and New York with the Afro-Cuban All-Star Band. He will present a project of different styles that he has composed and dedicated to different pianists and interpreters of universal jazz. The dynamic of this concert is a journey through different jazz eras and styles, including swing, bebop, ballads, hard bop, cool jazz, and more.
On Friday, February 1, the Salomon Maawad Jazz Quartet—with special guests the Fratribus String Quartet—will present a project of all original music based on a mix of rhythms from the Middle East, Latin, Brazilian, soul, funk, and fusion. All of the music was composed and arranged here in San Miguel de Allende and interpreted by outstanding musical artists of indisputable quality.
Victor Monterrubio is a very capable local drummer and percussionist. Ruben Olvera, bassist, is another great musician on an international level, and Salomon Maawad is outstanding on the saxophone. The Fratribus String Quartet has toured in various cities in Canada. They participated in the International Guitar Chamber Music Festival in México City, the San Miguel Chamber Music Festival. This past December, they performed the Requiem by Mozart in the Parroquia.
Salomon Maawad will present a suite called Exotic Nights of Babylonia, performed by his jazz quartet, and the Fratribus String Quartet will present a fusion of rhythms from the Middle East and jazz. The rest of the program will be a mix of Latin, samba, funk, and fusion rhythms all performed by the octet.
On Saturday, February 2, the Downbeats Jazz Quartet will perform its annual tribute to John Coltrane, who influenced thousands of musicians—not only saxophonists but also pianists, trumpeters, and guitarists. His unique style is recognizable everywhere, able to be heard in the performances of musicians of all ages.
