Chorale San Miguel Christmas 2021:  Sun.,  Dec. 19,  2021,  4pm

Chorale San Miguel Christmas 2021:  Sun.,  Dec. 19,  2021,  7pm

Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata Wachet auf (“Sleepers Awake!”) is one of the composer’s most famous and beautiful works. It derives from an uplifting 16th century Lutheran hymn written to commemorate a German town’s emergence from a devastating epidemic. How appropriate, then, that Malcolm Halliday, the artistic director of Chorale San Miguel, has chosen the Bach cantata as the centerpiece of a joyful comeback concert for the holiday season. The concert, with choral singers, soloists, and small orchestra, will also feature the Magnificat of Francesco Durante, along with motets, carols, villancicos, and other uplifting seasonal music.

Since its founding in 2019, Chorale San Miguel has presented all its concerts at the Templo de la Tercera Orden, the magnificent 17th century temple that adjoins the San Francisco Church, on the corner of San Francisco and Juarez. In its sold-out Mozart Requiem and Handel Messiah concerts in late 2019, the large chapel within the temple was the performance area.

But with the current pandemic not yet eradicated, Chorale is performing in a different part of the temple: the main cloister, a commodious outdoor space within four walls. The result is enhanced Covid safety without sacrificing good natural acoustics. All seats are numbered and reserved, and spaced apart. The cloister has a ground floor and also a second floor loft, which necessitates a walk up a wide staircase with a banister, but offers superb sight lines and sound.

Chorale San Miguel is presenting concerts in large choral format, principally Masses, Oratorios, a cappella works, and choral and orchestral compositions from four centuries. Our venue is the historic Tercera Orden in the San Francisco convent complex, dating from the early 17th century, with excellent acoustics for choral music.

The Chorale is comprised of a core group of 32 auditioned singers, of whom a significant portion are professional singers, joining forces with talented area volunteer choral singers.

Auditions will be held periodically to augment the size of the chorus according to programming and performance needs for future concerts.

The Chorale draws on local and regional participants, including orchestra musicians from regional professional orchestras in Guanajuato and Queretaro.

Artistic Director is Malcolm Halliday, with conducting roles shared with Mauro Ledesma.
