San Miguel Poetry Café Begins Sixth SeasonTuesday, October 5, 2021 | 5:00–6:00 PM CDT | Via Zoomby Lee HarrisThe San Miguel Poetry Café will begin its new season of events at 5:00 p.m. October 5 with local poets Wendy Bichel, Signe Hammer and Ken Morrow reading from their recent works online.
Wendy Bichel was singing jazz professionally at the age of fourteen. After three years in Europe, she moved to NYC to present a series of one-woman shows as a singer-songwriter. Her first musical, Love, Sex & Rock & Roll, won her a fellowship from the MFA Program in Music Theatre Writing at NYU and was commissioned by the Public Theater, as was Give Me Your Eyes, later part of the Diez Minutos Festival in San Miguel. Her musical Bikers in Camelot premiered in San Miguel in 2019. She is currently working on Are You Dying to Live with Me, a two character vampire musical that looks at the pros and cons of immortality. She discovered her passion for writing poetry seven years ago thanks to poetry midwife Judyth Hill.Signe Hammer has published her poems in Fiction, New England Review, On Barcelona, and other publications. She has authored four nonfiction books, including a memoir that was selected as a New York Times Book Review Notable Book. Her short stories, articles, reviews and personal essays have appeared in such publications as Playgirl, Harper’s Bazaar, Travel/Holiday, Ms.and The Village Voice as well as in anthologies. She has taught writing at NYU, the San Miguel Writers Conference, and in her own workshops in San Miguel and on Zoom. As a writing coach and editor, she helps other writers develop their work. Ken Morrow set out to spend his life beating on things as a percussionist. Along the way the music got frozen into architecture. Now retired from that profession, he busies himself thawing architecture back into music, as a writer of program notes for classical performances, and as a poet. Ken writes poetry under the pen name K M Howard to honor his father, Howard Morrow. His first collection of poetry, Uncertainty Principle, was introduced at a Poetry Café reading in January 2019. Ken served on the Advisory Board of the Poetry Café from its founding in 2016 through 2019.
San Miguel Poetry Café will continue its sixth season events on the first Tuesday of each month into 2022, with more readings and other special events. The all-volunteer organization presents local and visiting poets, both established and emerging, sharing their work.
