McConaughey & Brickhouse:
Texas Truths
By Dena M. Cruz and Joy Sablatura
Academy Award® winning actor Matthew McConaughey and comedic storyteller, memoirist and actor Jamie Brickhouse will appear on the San Miguel Literary Sala Zoom stage on May 14, 2021, to discuss McConaughey’s unconventional memoir, Greenlights.
“There’s no ‘g’ on the end of ‘livin’ because life is a verb!”
Matthew McConaughey’s memoir, part life lessons, mantras on “livin” and excerpts from his diaries, will inspire and entertain you. Greenlights has been a New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction Bestseller for over 25 weeks and has been well received by both critics and readers. It has been called “an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom and [life] lessons.”
Raised in Texas, McConaughey had a tumultuous upbringing with his parents marrying three times after divorcing twice. “I wouldn’t give back one ass-whupping I got for the values that are ingrained in me,” said McConaughey. He is a Christian and attends a non-denominational church in Austin. In Greenlights, he shares stories about some of his best-known roles and writes about his single life, “I wore the leathers. I rode the Thunderbird. I took a lot of showers in the daylight hours, rarely alone. I partook.” His memoir is “unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid.”
McConaughey has confirmed he is considering a run to be the Governor of Texas and is polling ahead of the current Governor Greg Abbott. He said he wants “to get into a leadership role in the next chapter of my life.”
Jamie Brickhouse, a fellow Texan, standup comedian and critically-acclaimed writer is the author of the celebrated book and one-man show, Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir of Booze, Sex, and my Mother. Author Wally Lamb described this book as “a poignant, hilarious, and sharply observed story of a gay man’s exchange of self-destruction and self-loathing for wisdom and a mature understanding of love.” A four-time Moth StorySLAM champion, Jamie has published essays and articles in the NYTimes, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune and The Huffington Post.
This is a terrific opportunity to hear some “Texas Truths” about growing up in the Lone Star State, performing and writing. As always, you will have an opportunity to come up “on stage” and interact with Matthew and Jamie at the end of their presentation and get your questions answered. These two Texans will have a grand time conversing with one another. It promises to be an unconventional and lively evening!
Tickets are on a sliding scale basis and you can pay what you wish: $5 to $50 and may be obtained at: https://sanmiguelliterarysala.org
