The Day of the Dead is among the oldest and varied traditions of Mexico. One of the most syncretic events celebrated by Mexicans, it features many ancient and modern elements of veneration and worship, both Pre-Hispanic and Catholic.
From the Hanal Pixán festivities in the south to the celebration of the souls, the trip to Mictlán, and the visit to the cemeteries in the first days of November, the Day of the Dead has evolved, been transformed and in many cases preserved from generation to generation.
This unique tradition has been enriched through the different ways it is celebrated in Mexico. For children, adults and elders alike, the Day of the Dead identifies us as Mexicans and is an opportunity to share our culture and traditions.
Although the festivities take place throughout Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated differently in the north, in the south, in the interior and on the coast. For some, it is a day of sadness; for others, a holiday.
On the Day of the Dead we will deepen our understanding of many elements related to the celebration of this holiday: the visit to the cemeteries, the famous “Pan de Muerto” (Bread of the Dead), the waiting for our deceased loved ones who visit us.Is the Day of the Dead an exclusively Mexican tradition? We will also learn about how it is celebrated in other countries, including the differences and similarities, as well as the cultural features of each place that make this celebration even more enriching.
Come and discover the colour of the cempasúchil flowers in the cemeteries, the smell from a copal, the flavours of the Pan de Muerto, sharing a time with our dead ones. Let’s live life with passion, and celebrate death with love.
