A Pulitzer Prize-winning former New York Times reporter and an Emmy Award-winning producer, Smith’s career spans over 26 years with the New York Times, where he served as a correspondent, editor, and bureau chief in Moscow and Washington. He covered the stories that have defined our times—from the civil rights movement, Vietnam, the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, to recent developments in terrorism, healthcare, education, and the environment.
In 1989, he transitioned to television, producing and reporting more than 50 hours of long-form documentaries for PBS over the following 25 years. His credits include 26 primetime specials and mini-series.
He is the acclaimed author of five bestselling books, including Who Stole the American Dream? and The Power Game: How Washington Works. Awards include Pulitzers for his work on the Pentagon Papers and for stories on Russia and Eastern Europe, and Emmys for his PBS Frontline and other productions.
