Judgment at Nuremberg
– Livestream Film History Program
Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 8:30 PM
Join us for a special screening, analysis and audience discussion of Judgment at Nuremberg.
January 27, 2021 is Holocaust Remembrance Day and throughout the month we will be hosting several programs related to the Holocaust.
For this program we will be watching the original 1959 teleplay version of Judgment at Nuremberg.
Before the 90-minute film screening our program will feature an analysis and discussion, including some optional audience participation activities that you can chose to participate in, or not.
We will also briefly discuss two other Nuremberg films: Judgment at Nuremberg (the 1961 Hollywood version) and Nuremberg (2000 miniseries).
Judgment at Nuremberg (1959) was an American television play broadcast live on April 16, 1959, as part of the CBS television series, Playhouse 90. It was a courtroom drama written by Abby Mann and directed by George Roy Hill that depicts the trial of four German judicial officials as part of the Nuremberg trials. Claude Rains starred as the presiding judge with Maximilian Schell as the defense attorney, Melvyn Douglas as the prosecutor, and Paul Lukas as the former German Minister of Justice.
Set in Nuremberg, Germany in 1948, the teleplay depicts a fictionalized version of the Judges’ Trial of 1947, one of the 12 U.S. military tribunals during the Subsequent Nuremberg trials. Many consider the Judges’ Trial to be one of the most significant and noteworthy of the Nuremberg trials.
The film centers on a military tribunal led by Chief Trial Judge Dan Haywood, before which four German judges and prosecutors (as compared to 16 defendants in the actual Judges’ Trial) stand accused of crimes against humanity for their involvement in atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. The story deals with non-combatant war crimes against a civilian population, the Holocaust, and examines the post-World War II geopolitical complexity of the actual Nuremberg Trials.
Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) is an American courtroom drama film directed by Stanley Kramer, written by Abby Mann and starring Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Maximilian Schell, Werner Klemperer, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, William Shatner, and Montgomery Clift.
Nuremberg (2000) is a Canadian/United States television docudrama, based on the book Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial by Joseph E. Persico, that tells the story of the Nuremberg trials. The film stars Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Brian Cox and Christopher Plummer.
