Anyone can Paint an Icon. Ironically less experience is always better; it is difficult to unlearn what we have learned. Whether it is theology or another painting technique, making room for new awareness is innocence. Mixing dirt and mystery is definitely uplifting, every brush stroke reminds you of the moment in Genesis where breath and creation meet. New Beginnings where anything can happen!

Icon painting workshop in the Studio in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

The studio is air conditioned so this year we will be cool!
3 hours each morning and 3 hours each afternoon. begin 9 am to 3 pm each day
The cost is 360.00 USD

The group will get an introduction to Byzantine style traditional icon painting. The medium is egg tempera and our conversations and focus is offered in a  contemporary format. Students are led through the preparation of the icon, tracing the historical image and its theological basis, using egg emulsion, earth pigments, and gold leaf application. The group has lively and insightful discussion about God, why we are here and the glory of earth pigments.  We cover the symbolism and prayer embedded in this ancient tradition. Everyone will finish one icon.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

No experience necessary, we have small groups of six; safe distance, lots of air.

PROPOSED COURSE OUTLINE:
DAY 1
Opening with hands being blessed. Introduction to the theory of iconography, usage of traditional materials, tools, paint, bole. Students begin the composition for their icon.
DAY 2
Continued application of base colors using the puddle technique and further application of additional layers of color, line quality, learn about importance of consistency (thickness/thinness) of the paint in achieving the desired effect.
DAY 3
Emphasis on practicing the technique of paint application. Learn about how to use different consistencies of paint and different techniques when working with egg tempera paint.
DAY 4
Learn “brushstroke technique” .Follow with lettering and Gold leaf.
DAY 5
Final lines, and details.
Completion of painting, correction of mistakes, Final blessing of the icon
