Class is 1/10 and 1/12, 1-3pm with a one-hour social hour to follow.
We will start with a brief overview of Impressionism and information about the different salons, art dealers, galleries, critics and magazines, mostly in Paris. We’ll see the evolution of art after the earthquake caused by Impressionism, and the scandals that accompanied this evolution, as seen in the art exhibitions in Paris and some European salons (Vienna, Dresden, Munich) between 1886 and 1914.
The first part, covering 1886 and 1905, will be about Neo-Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, with Seurat, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. The second part, between 1905 and 1914, will cover Fauvism, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Cubism and Abstract Art, with Matisse, Klimt, Modigliani, Picasso and Kandinsky. Images and some videos will accompany the lecture.
