A unique sale at Bordello Galería on May 25 will feature rarely seen handwoven high-end clothing from Chiapas and fund university scholarships for Mexican students trying to beat the cycle of poverty in their families.
All proceeds will be used help these already successful students reach their dreams by participating in internships and taking English courses in other countries.
On sale will be designer dresses, capes, ponchos, blouses, purses, and more. All items have been crafted by expert weavers from the Mayan Highlands of Chiapas, using the traditional and ancient technique of weaving every thread by hand, with no needles, on the backstrap loom. A few of the vintage pieces are rare and no longer are being made. However, the majority of merchandise incorporate fusions of old and new. Those who attended the sale last year will be surprised by the boutique textiles available this year.
These expert weavers and talented designers have created not “mercado products” but one-of-a-kind wearable pieces, each expertly designed and hand-made by the best weavers from these indigenous communities.
Come to Bordello Galería to learn about the history of indigenous people in the Mayan regions of México and Guatemala and their history using the backstrap loom. Learn about these textiles’ quality and their weavers’ techniques. Finally, support a very worthy cause, and meet some of the young women who have
had the opportunity to travel abroad to study, and who will be present to share their stories.
