It’s that time of the year again.  All of the customs of Day of the Dead play out in Mexico and on the Streets of San Miguel de Allende.   But it’s much more than having your face painted, parading to the Jardin, and partying into the wee small hours. Tuesday’s Mid-day Rotary Club guest is Mary Jane Miller, an accomplished artist who will tell you everything you need to know about Day of the Dead.

This is a time we honor the dead.   In Mexico, we celebrate Day of the Dead, All Souls day, along with All Saints day. For many, it’s a perfect time for choosing a corner of your home to build a small altar to the dead, a memorial space commemorating in spirit those who you loved and wish to honor their absence through making them present. Position a small table filled with photos, food, candles, their favorite objects and any other token which might help their memory bloom again in your heart.

Mary Jane will give a power point presentation of altars and saints, using a variety of images and exploring various perspectives on where we go when we die. Her lectures are fun and vibrant, pulling our minds into playful and profound places. Example being, Reliquaries; an architectural feature in many churches housing under glass collections of sacred body parts, popular around the 4th century. They contained the physical remains of saints such as bones, body parts, pieces of clothing, or some object associated with saints or other religious figures. Imagine such a tradition!

Mary Jane Miller is a self-taught icon painter with over 25 years of experience. Her work is known and exhibited in galleries, museums, and churches in both the United States and Mexico.

As Day of the Dead approaches, please join us for this most interesting presentation that is certain to enhance your Day of the Dead activities.  The time is 9:00 AM, Tuesday, October 30th  at our new location, Cafeteria San Miguel Essen on Stirling Dickinson
