 Did you know that Mexico City is the fourth largest film and television production center in North America, as well as the largest in Latin America?

Mexican cinema has a long and illustrious history from the first silent films to today.

Midday Rotary Club welcomes Jesus Ibarra who will explain the development of Mexican cinema: From the silent movies to the first sound film, “Santa”, in 1932; The Golden Age (40s-50s); The new Mexican Cinema (the 70s); to current modern movies.

Mexican cinema has changed over the decades. Jesus will describe changes in the way of acting, the “star system” in movies, and censorship in Mexican cinema. Who were the movie stars in the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (40’s and 50s)? Are there still movie stars today? How has the popularity and distribution of Mexican movies changed? What movies were filmed in San Miguel de Allende?

By the way, did you know that the model for the Oscar statuette was a Mexican?

Jesús Ibarra has written four books about Mexican cinema and theater and a book about the history of San Miguel de Allende, which is currently in printing. He is the current director of Instituto Allende, school of art and Spanish. Born in Mexico City, Jesús Ibarra has lived in San Miguel de Allende for 23 years. He is also a journalist and former editor of Atención San Miguel, the local bilingual newspaper in San Miguel. He is a professor of English at the University of León. His books include: The Brachos: Three Generations of Mexican Film, Carmen Montejo, a Tall Woman and, most recently, The Gardener of Ghosts: The Life and Work of Carlos Ancira.
