For three years, beginning in 1808, a group of conspirators had been planning the overthrow of 300 years of Spanish rule and oppression in Mexico. These secret meetings took place at a home that borders the north end of the Jardin under the guise of social events. Among the conspirators was Ignacio Allende and Juan and Ignacio Aldama. Also in on the plot was the wife of the Governor of Queretaro and the somewhat rebel Catholic priest from Dolores, Father Manuel Hidalgo.
The conspirators were planning a December 1810 uprising, but their plan was leaked to the Spanish authorities. And so, being tipped off, our conspirators decided plan B, and the revolution began September 16, 1810. Of course, to hear the whole story, you’ll need to be at the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende on Tuesday, September 10, as Mexico prepares for its 209th Birthday. Our guest speaker is a local expert Dali Amaro. Dali is a profession and certified tour guide specializing in historical tours of San Miguel de Allende with both Discovery Tours and the tours operated by Patronato Pro Niño’s. His presentation will center on the role San Miguel de Allende (then known as San Miguel El Grande) played in the Independence movement. You’ll learn about the cast of characters that we memorialize today as the country’s heroes, the reasons that touched off the war of independence, and why San Miguel de Allende is considered the cradle of independence.
Don’t miss this intriguing journey into our city’s historical past as we prepare to celebrate Mexican Independence. Join the Midday Club of San Miguel de Allende and our guest speaker, Dali Amaro, on Tuesday, September 10 at Los Arcos, on Sterling Dickenson next to the yellow caboose. Doors open at 9 AM, and the meeting is called to order at 9:30.
