Rotary San Miguel de Allende-Midday newest community project – Wise Girls!
Have you ever heard of “conscious menstruation?” Well, let’s talk about it: the term encompasses several factors such as the knowledge of our own body, the recognition of the beauty that exists in this very natural process, learning to manage the period in a sustainable, dignified and hygienic way, and the feeling of empowerment/pride that menstruating brings — menstruating makes us capable of giving life! It’s a tough process! It is natural and therefore beautiful!
Wise Girls is a Rotary project aimed at girls who, upon entering puberty, begin their menstrual cycle and in many cases:
1) Do not have education/information about it
2) Do not have the economic resources to acquire products of menstrual hygiene
3) Live in an environment which generates taboos and shame regarding menstruation. And a long etcetera
Wise Girls addresses each and every one of these problems with talks, dynamics and all the information that is essential for women to be able to experience their femininity from the point of view of safety and naturalness. This is particularly important for those who live in rural communities where education regarding this topic is limited. That is why on June 12th there will be a bazaar where local artists and artisans will participate with the goal of raising funds for the Wise Girls. Hours will be 10am to 5pm at Geek & Coffee in Fabrica Aurora.
Menstrual health, education, and hygiene empower girls and women. We dream and work for each girl to own her power by experiencing her biological wisdom, recognizing her authentic beauty, welcoming her periods, and having the means to manage them sustainably and proudly so that they can live up to their potential. These young women in rural and urban communities need us,” said Nancy Hoch and Teri Kavanagh, who are organizers of the event together with Geek & Coffee and Amigos al 100.
Everything raised during the bazaar will benefit the Wise Girls Rotary Project and participating girls will be able to attend free. “It is important that girls receive this education and guidance, since many times even as adults or mothers, women are unaware of many things about menstruation, or feel negative emotions about it. The project aims to create positive awareness and empower girls to feel healthy, safe, and wise!” the organizers concluded.
Wise Girls: We dream and work for each Girl to Own her Power by experiencing her biological wisdom, recognizing her authentic beauty, welcoming her periods and having the means to manage them sustainably and proudly so she can live up to her full potential.
We mentor girls in knowledge, so they have the foundation to make good decisions for their bodies, their health, and for all their relationships.
