Internationally acclaimed documentary, LAS ABOGADAS Premieres in Mexico at GIFF
LAS ABOGADAS: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis, is an official selection at San Miguel’s Guanajuato International Film Festival and will screen Monday, July 24 at 3pm Bellas Artes.
Admission is FREE. No tickets required.
The story of LAS ABOGADAS begins right here, in San Miguel de Allende with an incredible community outpouring of support and love during the large migrant caravans in fall 2018. Dozens of residents brought food, clothing and other essentials to the thousands of people crossing Guanajuato. Hundreds more supported the efforts with donations of money, time and supplies.
The award-winning documentary follows four immigration attorneys, including SMA resident, Rebecca Eichler, over a multi-year odyssey as the U.S. government under President Trump upends every law meant to protect those fleeing from persecution, violence and war.
From setting up a legal clinic in a Volkswagen bus in the middle of five thousand desperate migrants, to forcing border guards to follow the law and accept a blind woman into U.S. custody, to crossing the border to counsel African migrants stuck in Tijuana, to giving legal advice in the brutally hot Mexican sun to families desperate to see American soil — we watch our characters’ surreal journeys to try and help.
Film Director Victoria Bruce, Executive Producer and SMA Resident Careen Shannon, and featured Abogada Rebecca Eichler will be in attendance. The film also features the work of SMA artists: original song by Liah Alonso and artwork by Mila Villasana.
