Participants in this week’s UUFSMA Sunday Service will readily appreciate the innate familiarity of the career of Guest Speaker Holly Wilmeth with the Seventh Principle of Unitarian Universalism, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” As an artist she is well known for creating powerful images that express her life’s sacred dance and embody elements of nature, mysticism, and spirituality. Portraying both wisdom and wonder, her images reveal a visual journey into the wonders of being human and part of the Earth.

“Nature has been a loyal source of creative inspiration for me since I first started taking pictures in 1999,” Wilmeth says. “I was just starting to make portraits of people in Guatemala, and I would stage them holding different natural objects like seeds, plants, and flowers. All these objects collected on my bedroom shelves as a child were finally being used in a creative way.”

In becoming an adult, rather than abandon childish things, Wilmeth embraced the pathways that her childhood imagination opened for her creative spirit. “Looking back, I see how I am really doing the same thing I imagined myself to be doing as a child,” she says, “but with more awareness of the wisdom that nature holds. So much of the work I do is ignited through curiosity, adventure, and learning. This awe shapes my work and deep reverence for our planet and the simple beauty of the present moment.”

Her latest series, “Sacred Nature,” birthed as she watched her son’s awe at the world around him and asked new questions of her own. “Who are these plants that surround me?” she explains. “What is their name, their message, or their medicine?”

Born and raised in Guatemala, Wilmeth has lived in San Miguel de Allende for 15 years. She has worked for a wide range of international clients, creating images for advertising as well as editorial projects. Her presentation will explore her passion for nature, intentional living, and creating beautiful spaces that feel like sanctuaries. She will also present a number of her stunning photographs during the service. More of her work can be seen at www.hollywilmeth.com
