We spoke with Rodrigo Sánchez of the duo Rodrigo y Gabriela about La Raíz de la Tierra and their philosophy of life. Find out what he told us about this restaurant that combines his love for animals, music, gastronomy, and art.
Rodrigo y Gabriela is a duo of guitarists Gabriela Quintero and Rodrigo Sanchez; winners of the Grammy for Best Contemporary Rock Album in 2020 for their album Mettavolution. This material reached #1 on Billboard’s “American/Folk” album chart.
They collaborated with Hans Zimmer for the soundtrack of Pirates of the Caribbean: Sailing on Mysterious Tides, and their song Tamacun appeared in the first episode of Breaking Bad. Both are dedicated to making acoustic rock but in their melodies, you can notice the influence of Latin sounds, flamenco, and Metallica.
Rodrigo and Gabriela have carved their path in music and have achieved success and international recognition. The duet has performed at the most important international festivals such as Coachella, Glastonbury, and Vive Latino.
They are currently touring the United States and will culminate with a performance at the Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City in 2022.
Rodrigo Sánchez has embodied his philosophy of life embodied in his love for animals, music, and art in La Raíz de La Tierra, his vegan restaurant, which opened its first branch in 2015 in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. It recently opened a new location in San Miguel de Allende.
“A year ago we started traveling se San Miguel to Ixtapa and we saw that several locations were free and there was a location very close to the parish that we were offered for destination issues. I had told Fernando ‘it would be incredible to open our third branch here, outside of Zihuatanejo’ and it all came together,” he says.

La Raíz de la Tierra’s new location in San Miguel de Allende is located in a basement with a window for express service, but if you want to enjoy the full experience it is best to enter the basement which has a minimalist Nordic style with Bauhaus influences. “I really like the design vibe and I took the opportunity to do a different vibe,” adds Rodrigo.About the menu, Rodrigo Sánchez mentions that La Raíz de la Tierra’s offerings are focused on diners who are looking to transition to veganism.
“It’s a transitional restaurant for people who think veganism or plant-based eating is kind of weird. They will find hamburgers, hot dogs, waffles, hot cakes; all that vibe but all plant-based with the gluten-free alternative.” he adds.
At La Raíz de la Tierra, Rodrigo brings together his passions; among them, music, which plays a fundamental role in this alternative project. At the Ixtapa location, being larger, they have cultural events constantly.
“Music plays a fundamental part because not only when you enter a place you have to feel that you are attracted to the essence of the place and for me it is. It is very important that it is accompanied by sounds that can fill that part you are looking for”.
