With the union of the provincial municipality of Cusco and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Peru are now brothers. The solemn act of the signing of the twinning agreement between the cities of Cusco and San Miguel de Allende, both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, was held in the Salón de Cabildos of the Municipal Palace.
The meeting was headed by the municipal president, Jesús Gonzalo González Rodríguez and Víctor Germán Boluarte Medina, mayor of the Provincial Municipality of Cusco.
“Today, in the understanding of twinning with those cities that share similarities, mission, culture, and lifestyle, we are pleased to twin with Cusco, Peru,” said Gonzalo Gonzalez.
From a distance and virtually, María Cristina Emigdia Ruiz, representative of the Mexican Embassy in Peru, assured that the twinning agreement signed by both cities will strengthen the ties of cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
The Ambassador of Peru in Mexico, Julio Hernán Garro Gálvez emphasized that this union has the potential to make them stand out in the world, after the pandemic, thanks to the shared cultural base that will allow the development of tourism.
Víctor Germán Boluarte pointed out that Peru and Mexico share a pre-Columbian past and a mestizaje that, up to now, is full of material and immaterial wealth, for which reason this twinning represents a reason for special recognition and commemoration.
Gonzalo González recalled Felipe Cossío del Pomar, a Peruvian historical figure who arrived in San Miguel de Allende in 1927 and contributed in an important way to promote art in this city.
He also pointed out that these actions project San Miguel de Allende in the eyes of the world by generating cultural and educational exchanges that promote tourism and achieve friendly relations between peoples, “consolidating it as a world destination, as an international reference and as the Best City in the World to visit”.
