The “Babe” Vazquez, a San Miguel boxer who managed to win championship belts in his battles around the world, today the COMUDE building bears his name in honor of this sports figure, but, the appointment was made without his family, without his friends, and took a different character to inaugurate it.
The COMUDE (Javier Patlan) and the Youth (Ricardo Trujillo), took over an event in which they had to bring a boxer who was not “Babe” Vázquez, who was not from San Miguel, who did not know the COMUDE, nor did he know the relatives of Babe Vázquez.
Babe Vazquez was honored but only in his memory, because his character, neither his children, nor his sisters, nor his nephews, nor his relatives were invited.
Who was “Babe” Vazquez?
Originally from San Miguel de Allende (Guanajuato), he was born in Cabrera on June 10, 1931. He had a very poor childhood in the countryside, he studied until the third grade of elementary school.
He left home very early, he left his town, he made a great career, he became a great boxer during the 50s and 60s. He was a very luchon boy, he left his family to go in search of his dreams and make them come true, he married the same girl from San Miguel, and they went to live in Mexico City, sometime later, some of his relatives moved back to the small town.
From a very young age, he lived in Mexico City. He was always linked to boxing and until 2008 he gave private lessons and also prepared his disciples in the gym.
“Babe” Vazquez left an impressive 102-40-4 record, 34 knockouts. He was a national lightweight champion and held several fights abroad, specifically in the United States and Havana.
He made his professional debut in 1950 and retired in 1974. He fought against the likes of Alfredo “Canelo” Urbina, Panchito Uribe, Mauro Vázquez, Paulie Brooks and Ernesto Figueroa.
José Bernabé “Babe” Vázquez Rodríguez, died on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at the age of 77, in a car accident.His sisters, who live in San Miguel de Allende, are Socorro and Juana Vázquez Rodríguez. He married a young lady from the La Aurora neighborhood, Guadalupe Salgado, with whom he had six children: Raúl, Rogelio, José Luis, María, Isabel, and José Antonio Vázquez Salgado.
“Babe” Vázquez was a very important boxer in his time and achieved many championship belts, he remained undefeated for almost 30 years.
A week ago, municipal authorities baptized the sports module of the Salida a Los Rodriguez with the name of the San Miguel de Allende boxer, where they did not invite any of his family and friends, instead they preferred to bring a boxer from outside San Miguel de Allende, which has his children quite upset, especially the eldest, “Raul”, who at the time said that if they did something to his father, they were willing to donate a belt he held for almost 30 years undefeated, and several other things.
