Agricultural producers in northeastern Guanajuato see the light at the end of the tunnel, as more than 1,000 hectares of rainfed crops will be harvested due to the abundant rains in recent months, said Francisco Escobar Osornio, leader of the Unión Campesina Democrática de Guanajuato, who said there will be corn and bean crops in Dolores Hidalgo, San Luis de la Paz, Victoria, Atarjea and Xichú.
He pointed out that the wait to obtain a good harvest has been long since at least in the last two years, the municipalities in the northeast of the state did not have good agricultural production due to the drought problems that have afflicted the entity, however, he said that currently the outlook is encouraging and it seems that the harvest will be successful.
“Irrigation has no problem, with the rains that there is and with the availability of irrigation, in the field there is nothing certain because pests or diseases in crops can harm but if there are high expectations, I expect that 90% of the crops in general will be very successful.”
He said that in the countryside the harvest is not guaranteed, as agricultural producers face several problems ranging from lack of economic resources to work their land, adverse weather conditions, or pests that regularly occur in crops, but this time the harvest will be good.
He pointed out that the driest municipalities in the state are San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo, San Felipe, Ocampo, Xichú, San Luis de la Paz, Victoria, Atarjea, and Santa Catarina and this time they will be able to harvest as they have not done for years since the rains have favored rainfed producers.
He expressed that this rainy year must be well used throughout the state since it is not possible to know if the next years will also be accompanied by rain or will return to dry years with little planting.
“Historically the most complicated is the northeast of the state, which is the driest area, from San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo, San Felipe, Ocampo to the north as Xichú, San Luis de la Paz, Victoria, Atarjea, Santa Catarina and that is the area where it rains less, fortunately with this rain there will be harvest and we hope it goes well”.
