San Miguel Literary Sala
Vendela Vida & Christopher Bollen
In ConversationApril 18, 2021
Join us for a refreshing conversation between two rising literary stars, both with brand new, award-winning novels. Vendela Vida’s sixth novel has created a sensation. It’s a mystery involving two likeable teens, set on the oceanfront in San Francisco. The NY Times called it “a gripping mystery and a tribute to the wonders of youth.” Vida is a founding editor of The Believer, a bimonthly literature, arts, and culture magazine. She will be in conversation with Christopher Bollen, a former editor of Interview Magazine, himself a novelist with a new book entitled A Beautiful Crime, which a reviewer called “a compelling take on the eternal question of how good people morph into criminals.”
Tom Hanks and E.J. Levy
In ConversationApril 23, 2021
We are proud and excited to bring Tom Hanks to our San Miguel Literary Sala “stage.” He brings a new voice to contemporary fiction in his collection of short stories, Uncommon Type. The stories are “Delightful . . . moving . . . filled with warmth, comedy and wisdom.” They are linked by one thing: in each of them, a typewriter plays a part, sometimes minor, sometimes central. To interview Mr. Hanks, we are fortunate to count an award-winning short story writer among our own faculty. Among other awards, E.J. Levy has won the Flannery O’Connor Award and the GLCA New Writers Award, which was previously awarded to Alice Munro, Louise Erdrich, and Richard Ford!
Remember, as in all of our Distinguished Speaker Series events, you will have the chance to ask Tom Hanks questions and to “come up onto the stage” for a one-on-one encounter with him.
Matthew McConaughey
In Conversation with Jamie BrickhouseMay 14, 2021
Matthew McConaughey, a wildly popular academy-award-winning movie star, has just published his memoir, which is #1 on the NYTimes bestseller list with over a million copies sold. Both readers and reviewers love this book. Greenlights has been called “an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and [life] lessons.” It is “unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid.”
His interviewer is equally talented and just as loveable a personality. Jamie Brickhouse — award-winning comedic storyteller, writer, and actor — is a veteran of the San Miguel Writers’ Conference. He presented his widely-toured solo performance, Dangerous When Wet: Sex, Booze, and My Mother, to a sold-out audience. Jamie’s essays and articles have been published in the NYTimes and numerous other publications.
Hallie Ephron
In Conversation with April EberhardtJune 20, 2021
When you meet Hallie Ephron, you will understand why she is a popular speaker, as well as a widely read author of suspenseful novels. Several of her eleven mysteries have been NYTimes bestsellers and her novel, Never Tell a Lie, was made into a movie for the Lifetime Movie Network. She has been a finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award five times. She has also written a guidebook for other mystery writers called Writing and Selling Your Mystery Novel, which Lee Child called, “the best how-to guide I have ever seen.”
Hallie will be in conversation with April Eberhardt, a much beloved literary agent who has been part of the San Miguel Writers’ Conference for many years and has become more and more popular and in demand each year.
Our purpose is to offer visibility, community, and inspiration to the writers and readers of San Miguel de Allende; to honor the long history of distinguished writers living and working here; to enrich the cultural life and educational opportunities for local residents in both Spanish and English; and to establish San Miguel de Allende as a leading destination for literary and cultural tourism commensurate with its status as a World Heritage Site. We believe that reading and writing are essential, that great literature enriches our lives, feeds our souls, and facilitates greater understanding of ourselves and others.
