The conquest of Mexico and the destruction of the Aztec Empire by Hernán Cortés, 400 Spaniards, and their Indian allies was one of the most dramatic and significant events in the history of the world. Even today the conquest remains controversial in Mexico. The chronology of this epic story will be reviewed, along with the roles of its three primary actors: Cortés, Moctezuma, and La Malinche, their Indian interpreter. Its significance for modern Mexico will be noted. Class discussion will focus on debunking the myths often associated with this story, which has never been fully portrayed on film or television.
