First Ladies – Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
– Livestream Program –
Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 7:00 PM
Join us for an online/virtual tour of the First Ladies exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.
The nation’s first ladies have influenced American history and culture since Martha Washington stepped into the role in 1789. They are, of course, tasked with picking out place settings and hosting parties, but beyond the walls of the White House, each one of them has left an indelible mark. They have also drawn attention to important social issues, altering the ways in which Americans think about themselves and one another.
“Every Eye Is Upon Me: First Ladies of the United States,” is the first major exhibition to explore the historical significance of this prominent position through the mode of portraiture. The exhibition will span nearly 250 years, from Martha Washington to Melania Trump, and will feature more than 60 portraits of the First Ladies, alongside related ephemera including iconic dresses. The exhibit is on view Nov. 13 through May 23, 2021, although the museum is temporarily closed due to COVID-19.
Your host for this program is Robert Kelleman, the founder/director of the non-profit community organization Washington, DC History & Culture.
