How is Mexico coping with the tragedy of traffic injuries and fatalities?
Dr. Arturo Cervantes Trejo will discuss trends that have resulted from studies where he and his colleagues carefully examined thousands of traffic fatalities and injuries. Using the framework of public health and epidemiology they study sex–age groups, vulnerable and protected road users, populations, and other many other factors that influence road safety.
Dr. Cervantes Trejo has a long and impressive resume. He earned his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, 1992), followed by a master’s degree in public health and a doctorate in public health from Harvard University. He is now the Chair of Public Health at the Universidad Anáhuac de México. In addition, he is a member of the Alliance for the Prevention of Violence of the World Health Organization and president of the National Alliance for Road Safety, a non-governmental group that works to save lives from traffic injuries and violence. He is certified by the National Public Health Council of Mexico and the National Board of Public Health Examiners of the United States. His research has led to the design and implementation of the Mexican National Program for Road Safety and the policy for the National Road Safety Strategy 2011 – 2020.
