    Ekphrasis: Poetry and Prose

    By Marcia Wolff

What is Ekphrasis anyway?  “Ekphrasis comes from the Greek for the description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical exercise in which one medium of art tries to relate to another medium by defining and describing its essence and form. In doing so, it relates more directly to the audience through its illuminative nature. It is a vivid, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined.”

Several published authors will participate at Galeria Manuk for the monthly Saturday Art Walk. The writers of poetry and prose have each chosen a piece of art in Lourdes Rivera’s beautiful gallery.  Come early rather than later for wonder, inspiration and delight as you hear and see each writer’s interpretation and how it connects both with the art, the artist, and within the writer.

Ellen Ackerman is the author of a fictional memoir titled Buddy’s Story. This is a story of the challenges of Cerebral Palsy in the days when there was little knowledge of how to compassionately care for the inflicted.  Ellen gives her Uncle Buddy a voice through poetry and prose.

Cynthia Claus is the author of two memoirs: An Orchid Sari: The Personal Diary of an American Mom in 1960’s India and Ice Cream and Pretzels and Other Stories.

Libbe Dennard, a poet and memoirist, holds an MFA from the University of Arkansas. Her chapbook of poetry A Journey was published by Finishing Line Press. She recently completed a work of creative non-fiction called Whispered on the Wind.

Kim Malcolm is the author of A Country Within, the story of her life-changing work with refugees in Greece.  She writes a travel blog and is currently working on a book about a Louisiana family’s fight for its own farmland.

Catherine Marenghi is an award-winning poet and memoirist.  Her poetry has appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies in the U.S. and Mexico.  Her forthcoming poetry book Breaking Bread will be published by Finishing Line Press in February 2020. Catherine is also author of Glad Farm: A Memoir, an acclaimed story of poverty and resilience.

Marcia Wolff’s book of poems, Frictions Becoming Pearl: A Slow Awakening was published by G.L. Designs. She has written monthly articles for the online women’s magazine Sibyl.  Her poems appear in the anthology Another Desert: Jewish Poets of New Mexico published by Sherman Asher Press. Nearing completion, The Rarest of Gems, a novel, is in the editing phase.

We look forward to celebrating art and writing and engaging with you, the audience.
