Tribute to British Folk Rock
Friday, March 8
7:00 pmLa Cocina de Cesar
Please join us Friday, March 8, from 7-9:30pm, for our Tribute to British Folk Rock show at La Cocina de Cesar, Salida a Celaya #12. This will be an acoustic show featuring the music of Fairport Convention (eg. “Crazy Man Michael”), Richard Thompson (eg. “Waltzing’s For Dreamers”), Sandy Denny (eg. “Who Knows Where the Time Goes”), Pentangle, Donovan, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, and other contemporary and ancient British folk.
In the late ’60s, Fairport Convention shifted from being a UK band that mainly covered Bob Dylan and other American folk songwriters to a band that explored modernizing the ancient British folk tradition, first with the epic song “A Sailor’s Life” and then the album that really launched the entire genre of British folk rock-“Liege and Lief” (’69). At the same time, the band members began writing material that sat very comfortably beside songs written 500 years earlier. If you’re not familiar with this music, it is a beautiful, emotion-stirring repertoire that we really think you’ll enjoy. So we hope you’ll come join us for a unique one-time night of music.
Performing will be local and seasonal SMA musicians:
–Walter Ehresman, ex-Austin singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist;
–Tomas Escalante, ex-Mexico City folk and rock interpreter;
–Dave Greenwald, Denver roots troubadour,
–Rob Ramsey, ex-San Antonio singer/songwriter, and
–Stephen Russell, Boston-area singer/songwriter.There’s no cover charge, although tipping is appreciated.
So come enjoy Cesar’s wonderful menu and fresh, delicious food, and spend a night hearing some music not often featured on this side of the pond. These shows tend to fill up, so call 415-121-0114 for reservations.
