Every year, the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende honors an outstanding local resident as our Citizen of the Year. The criteria for this award mirrors the fundamental tenet of Rotary clubs around the world, and that is service above self.
On February 26th, we are most excited to recognize Dra. Grace Lin, whose service to the elderly through S.O.M.E., So Others May Eat, is exemplary of service above self.
Grace Joanne Lim Baga was born in Toronto, Canada but grew up in San Miguel de Allende where, starting at the age of 5, she worked side by side with her mother Antonette, who founded S.O.M.E in 1989. Grace recollects that as a kid, she would always go to S.O.M.E. and serve. At the age of 18, she embarked on a medical career that, over 17 years took her from medical school to a very successful medical practice in Mexico City. Shortly before her beloved mother, Antonette, died in 2016 Grace asked if there is anything she needed. Antonette told her to keep the S.O.M.E. program going. It was a mother’s dying wish and a promise that Dra. Lim intends to keep. She and her father continued the feeding program, but on September 24, 2018, her father, Joe Lim unexpectedly died. Now, with both parents gone, the responsibility of keeping S.O.M.E. rests squarely on Dra. Lim’s shoulders.
A thirty-something human dynamo, Dra. Lim has a lot to juggle. Not only does she continue to practice medicine in San Miguel de Allende with her husband, but she now runs the Spa and Hotel, is a recent mom, and CEO of S.O.M.E. When asked what she could really use, she said “a 48-hour day”. Our community is truly blessed to have Dra. Grace Lim, a most deserving Citizen of the Year. Join us in honoring this remarkable woman on Tuesday, February 26th. We’re located at Cafeteria San Miguel Essen, next to the yellow caboose on Sterling Dickenson. Doors open at 9 AM with an optional breakfast for $100 pesos per person. The presentation will begin at 9:30 and is free.
