If I Had a Hammer: Pete Seeger’s Life in Song
A lecture and musical performance
Wed, 20 February 2019
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
‘If I Had a Hammer: Pete Seeger’s Life in Song’, performed by Stephen Richer, the banjo playing sociologist, is an interactive musical lecture with collective singing — and lots of space for audience participation. Richer is currently on tour through Mexico with this show to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Pete Seeger’s birth.
Professor Richer has a PhD in Sociology from the Johns Hopkins University and is currently a Professor Emeritus at Carleton University in Ottawa.
At age 16, he was captivated by Seeger’s mastery of the 5-string banjo, and, inspired by his musical activism, became heavily involved himself as a protest singer during the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movements.
This musical lecture is one of many on several different subjects related to the social history of protest through song that Richer performs around the world. We are extremely happy to have him bring Seeger’s life in song to San Miguel.
Since there is limited seating, please book early.

A terrific presentaion with history, personal stories and a deep knowledge of protest songs from early African-American to the 60’s. Sure to be enjoyed by all.
I was lucky enough to see this presentation twice at the Oaxaca Learning Library. I overheard one long-time Oaxaca resident say that this was the best presentation they had ever seen at the library. I have to agree. We were all singing, clapping along and there was more than one pair of moist eyes in the audience. Dr. Richer is not only extremely knowledgeable, he is a wonderful presenter, song leader and banjo player. And it was quite the honor to sing along with Canada’s first recipient of the Chmielnik Prize in Sociology.
My husband and I were privileged to attend this amazing lecture twice, on ce in Sarasota, Florida and recently in Oaxaca. Truly an event not to be missed, in both content and music. Dr. Richer received a well deserved standing ovation.
My husband and I were fortunate to not only attend this amazing not to be forgotten lecture in Sarasota, Florida once again but just recently in Oaxaca. Truly is an event not to be missed in its content and music. Dr. Richer received a well deserved standing ovation.
