By Irineo Muñoz
Pepe Alcocer is a San Miguel de Allende-based classical guitarist, composer, and educator. Born in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Alcocer took his first guitar lesson at age 10 with his father, Don José Humberto Alcocer Pulido.
Alcocer earned a BA degree from Universidad de Guanajuato School of Music, where graduated with honors in performance and composition. In addition, he has taken master classes with major international classical guitarists like Carlos Bonell, Douglas Lora, Jorge Caballero, Carlos Barbosa Lima, Oscar Ghiglia, Scott Tennant, René Izquierdo, David Russell, and Leo Brouwer. As a composer and performer, he has participated in several festivals around México and the US, among them the Festival Internacional de las Artes in Durango, the Festival de las Almas de Valle de Bravo, the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, the Festival SonorisArte of the Universidad de Tepic, and Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Zihuatanejo. Alcocer’s multiple performances in the US were at Mannes School of Music in New York City during the summers of 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2017, where he collaborated in the international release of “La Meccanica Secreta dei Liutai e le Loro Inarrivabili Chitarre” composed by Arthur Kampela. His passion led him to teach at Universidad Autonoma de Nayarit and later to become the founder of the Seminario y Campamento Musical de Ex-Hacienda de Tupataro in Cueramaro, Guanajuato, now the Instituto de Bellas Artes y Education.
Alcocer still performs as a guitarist in the duo Venas Latinas and as a soloist with his album Sonata del Frío.
