Sanmiguelenses Unidos (SMU) was formed in 2013 following an increase in home invasions, muggings and automobile thefts in San Miguel de Allende. Devoted to improving public safety, security and the quality of life in the municipality, SMU became a legally registered civic association (A.C.) in 2016. It has a seven-person steering committee, five of whom are elected officers. Currently Kate Frank Cohen serves as president, Jorge Garay as vice president, Matthias Heyer as treasurer, Bart Brandmiller as secretary, and Irma Rosado as spokesperson.
