We’re super excited about our first event of 2025, when we’ll hear original stories and essays exploring that uneasy moment when one experiences a sudden shift in circumstances. Falling from grace can mean anything from an abrupt loss of power or position to being a victim of bullying to revelations that what one once believed may not in fact be true.
Elisa Bernick is a writer and journalist based in St. Paul, Minnesota. A former public radio reporter and television documentary producer, she is a long-time writer and editor for numerous national magazines. She’s also the author of The Family Sabbatical Handbook: The Budget Guide to Living Abroad with Your Family, which won the 2007 Foreword Indies Silver Award, and Departure Stories: Betty Crocker Made Matzoh Balls (and other lies), which won the 2022 Foreword Indies Gold Award.
Mike Keefe and his wife, Anita Austin, have been full-time residents of San Miguel for eight years. Before that, Keefe was the editorial cartoonist for the Denver Post for decades. His work was nationally syndicated, appearing in Time magazine, Newsweek, the New York Times, and hundreds of other newspapers across the country. Among other journalism honors, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2011. He has played in numerous bands and has no known allergies.
Diana Kuper, the author of Finding Refuge: A Memoir, has been a psychotherapist for over 45 years. She is grateful for the privilege of living part-time in San Miguel de Allende for the past 14 years and also grateful for her writerly imagination, which has sustained her throughout her life.
Philip Gambone is the author of seven books, both fiction and nonfiction, including As Far as I Can Tell: Finding My Father in World War II, named one of the Best Books of 2020 by the Boston Globe. Here in San Miguel, Phil writes the bi-weekly column, “The Writer in Mexico,” for the online magazine Lokkal, and is working on a new memoir entitled Some Women, about the powerful Italian-American women in his family.
Poetry & Prose Cafés is an all-volunteer organization under the umbrella of the San Miguel Literary Sala. We present local and visiting writers reading original work once a month from October to March. Admission is free but a minimum donation of $100 pesos per person underwrites the costs of graphic design, promotional efforts, venue costs, and sound technicians. Authors’ books are for sale at our no-commission book table.
Doors open at 4:30PM but please arrive early. Seating is limited and this will also give you time to order one of Café Murmullo’s custom cocktails.
