  • Centuries before the Broadway musical came into existence, a genre of musical theater called zarzuela, combining dialog and song, was invented in Spain. Zarzuela is alive today, and one of its leading practitioners is the Madrid-based maestro Didier Otaola, a stage director, actor and lyric tenor, who last November gave a master class in this vibrant artform at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City.

On Friday, July 19, at 7pm, at the Teatro Angela Peralta, a new show in the zarzuela tradition will have its world premiere, with a cast of eight superb singers, in a staged production with sets, props and costumes. The show, entitled Viaje de Ida y Vuelta (“Round Trip”), pays tribute to the rich diversity and welcoming spirit of Mexico, a country that has opened its arms to citizens from all over the world.

The story, based on true events, begins in 1936, when a Spanish artist, enacted by Otaola, fleeing a country torn by civil war, crosses the ocean for Mexico, in search of a better life. He encounters other like-minded artists and dreamers, and among them are singers of great talent – sopranos, tenors and baritones – of various nationalities.

The show’s rich musical score is a fusion of Spanish, Anglo-Saxon and Mexican popular music, performed in solos and choruses by an all-star troupe, whose members, in addition to Otaola, include (alphabetically by last name): Alfredo Carrillo, tenor; Pao Díaz, soprano; Lean Flores, baritone; Don Krim, countertenor; Karina Pegueros, soprano; Octavio Rivas, tenor; and José Valdepeña, baritone. They will be accompanied on the piano by the noted pianist and composer Jacobo Cerda. If many of the performers’ names are familiar, it is no surprise; the cast includes MetOpera competition finalists and singers who have enacted leading roles on opera stages in Mexico and other countries. Countertenor Don Krim, an audience favorite in San Miguel, will give his first performance in San Miguel since the Covid hiatus.

Though highly entertaining, Viaje de Ida y Vuelta is a story driven by the tumult of the first half of the 20th century, with themes of immigration and colonial history that are relevant today. It is also a celebration of the perseverance and uniting power of art, and the generosity of the Mexican spirit.
