PART 1: FROM PRESHISTORY TO THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY IN WESTERN TRADITION.
The Protean Life of the Theater!
Twenty-five centuries of history in a four-part PowerPoint presentation of one hour and a bit each!
Bea would like to share this life with you at the crossroads of the sacred and the profane, the religious and the secular, from its origins in Ancient Egypt (not Greece!), right up until our modern era.
Bea will take you through different epochs, through different cultures. I’ll take you through all the different genres the theater explored: rituals, tragedies, comedies, social and political satires, farces, religious Mysteries, Morality Plays, to name but a few!
The first part will begin with the now recognized and admitted hypothesis of prehistorical ceremonial performances involving masked shamans, then going to Ancient Egypt with its staged dramas and satires, to reach the Western culture of Theater, mainly Greece, Italy, France, England, and Germany, right through to the end of the 18th century.
