2nd Avenue On Celluloid: Yiddish Film Festival
Original Yiddish movies starring famous Yiddish actors portraying Jewish immigrant life during the early 20th century. Presented in honor of Frederick Edell’s memory, a retired Canadian University Professor, and Professor Emeritus of Film and Theater.
The first film of the series stars Maurice Schwartz in “Uncle Moses,”a drama set in the sweatshops of the garment district. Film Forum writes, “UNCLE MOSES stands as one of the finest examples of Yiddish cinema and is unique in its portrayal of a despotic Jewish factory boss who takes pleasure in seeing the tables turned by employing the former leaders and highly respected men of his shtetl as sweatshop tailors.
All films are in Yiddish with English subtitles.
