At the top of one of the most emblematic hills of San Miguel de Allende is “El Chorro”, a place where history springs – literally – from the earth.

Did you know that the name “El Chorro” comes from the abundant springs that were born at this point? For centuries, these waters supplied the city and set the course for its development.

Its original name, Izquinapan, means “water of dogs”. Tradition has it that it was here that Fray Bernardo de Cossin, guided by Xoloitzcuintle dogs, found the springs that would change the history of the settlement. Thanks to this finding, the town that was originally located in San Miguel Viejo was moved to this new territory, giving rise to what we know today as San Miguel de Allende.

Thus, El Chorro is not only a picturesque corner: it is the point where the history of the city began.

Today, visiting El Chorro is to enter a historic park that combines colonial architecture, nature and unparalleled panoramic views. Its cobbled paths, its small chapel and the old washing place evoke the daily life of other centuries.
