Dominating the north façade of the Main Garden of San Miguel de Allende stands the Old Municipal Palace, a building that transcends its architectural importance to become one of the most transcendent historical monuments in Mexico. This building, which keeps in its quarry walls the memory of the dawn of National Independence, is the place where the first pages of Mexican freedom were written.

The history of this palace dates back to 1736, when it was originally built as the town hall of San Miguel el Grande. However, although the building has suffered several partial destructions over the centuries and little remains of its original architecture, its historical value remains intact and makes it a site of patriotic pilgrimage. It was precisely here that on September 17, 1810, just one day after the legendary Grito de Dolores, the priest Miguel Hidalgo, General Ignacio Allende and Ignacio Aldama established the first independent City Council in Mexico.

This founding act marked the formal beginning of the insurgent government and represented the first autonomous political structure of the independence movement. The Old Municipal Palace thus became the first government building in independent Mexico, where the crucial decisions that would shape the nascent country were made. Today, the building houses municipal offices and maintains its administrative function, but its simple and elegant neoclassical façade remains a silent testimony to those heroic days when San Miguel de Allende became the cradle of Mexico’s first free government.

Dominando la fachada norte del Jardín Principal de San Miguel de Allende se alza el Antiguo Palacio Municipal, un edificio que trasciende su importancia arquitectónica para convertirse en uno de los monumentos históricos más trascendentes de México. Este inmueble, que guarda en sus muros de cantera la memoria de los albores de la Independencia Nacional, es el lugar donde se escribieron las primeras páginas de la libertad mexicana.

La historia de este palacio se remonta a 1736, cuando fue construido originalmente como casa consistorial de San Miguel el Grande. Sin embargo, aunque el edificio ha sufrido diversas destrucciones parciales a lo largo de los siglos y poco queda de su arquitectura original, su valor histórico permanece intacto y lo convierte en un sitio de peregrinaje patriótico. Fue precisamente aquí donde el 17 de septiembre de 1810, apenas un día después del legendario Grito de Dolores, el cura Miguel Hidalgo, el general Ignacio Allende e Ignacio Aldama establecieron el primer Ayuntamiento independiente de México.

Este acto fundacional marcó el inicio formal del gobierno insurgente y representó la primera estructura política autónoma del movimiento independentista. El Antiguo Palacio Municipal se convirtió así en el primer edificio gubernamental del México independiente, donde se tomaron las decisiones cruciales que darían forma al naciente país. Actualmente, el edificio alberga oficinas municipales y mantiene su función administrativa, pero su fachada neoclásica sencilla y elegante sigue siendo un testimonio silencioso de aquellos días heroicos cuando San Miguel de Allende se convirtió en la cuna del primer gobierno libre de México.
