National Water Commission, state and municipal authorities and residents of the area participate in water lily cleanup
· “Taking care of the dam is essential for the lives of the people and the Guanajuato that we share”: Jorge Daniel Jiménez Lona, Secretary of Government
San Miguel de Allende, Gto., May 16, 2026.- With the participation of the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the Government of the People, the municipal governments of San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo, as well as volunteers from the region, the second day of water lily removal was held at the Ignacio Allende dam.
Jorge Daniel Jiménez Lona, representing Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, was accompanied by Ángel Ernesto Ortega Mata, Local Director of CONAGUA in Guanajuato, as well as representatives of the three levels of government and citizens who joined this day of cleanup and environmental recovery.
The Secretary of Government stressed that taking care of the dam is a task for everyone, a fundamental task as a society, because when it comes to protecting our hydraulic resources there are no colors or ideologies that serve as a pretext; the only color is that of clean water.
“Today we are getting a little closer to this goal, through the cleaning of the lily in the Allende Dam, one of the most important in the state. We know that for many years this problem has been faced and today it marks a before and after thanks to the sum of efforts between citizens and institutions. We also recognize the impulse of the Federation, through CONAGUA, to address this citizen claim to which the Government of Guanajuato joins,” he said.
Jiménez Lona considered that this day represents an important step not only for the direct benefit in the cleaning and protection of the dam’s water, but also for the symbolic value of joining efforts between citizens and governments to attend to a common cause for the benefit of the entire region.
“We are carrying out a cleaning day to extract the lily mechanically and manually. Each action adds up and contributes to reducing this pest that currently invades about 45 percent of the dam, affecting both fishermen and the ecosystem and water storage. I sincerely recognize your generosity in dedicating part of your time to this task that is as indispensable as it is demanding, because we will always need water to move forward, prosper, drink and live,” he said
It should be noted that Governor Libia Dennise has instructed to strengthen coordination actions with the National Water Commission and the municipalities to comprehensively address the problem of the water lily in the Ignacio Allende dam.
Personnel from CONAGUA, the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), agencies of the People’s Government and municipal authorities of Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende participated in the day.
